At the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP-17 conference in Durban, the United States delegation held a day of side events focused on agriculture and food security. USDA organized or co-organized three sessions, including one on the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS NET), one on public-private partnerships to promote sustainable agriculture, and one on Feed the Future.
The Feed the Future session featured talks by Bill Hohenstein, Director of the Climate Change Program Office at USDA; Julie Howard, USAID Food Security Chief Scientist; Dubale Admasu from USAID/Ethiopia; and Charles Hopkins from CARE Ethiopia.
The session covered topics ranging from Feed the Future’s Research Portfolio to the issues facing pastoralists in Ethiopia, and how Feed the Future can help them. All three events were widely attended and highlighted the need to think about agricultural adaptation and food security issues under a changing climate.
